Heavy rain caused serious flooding in southern Brazil on Thursday as Santa Catarina rescue teams scrambled to help evacuate hundreds of families trapped inside their homes.

Footage released by area defense teams shows helicopters hovering over the dirty water, which surged forward and flooded homes up to the roof.

From the rescue operations, it became possible to rescue over 880 people, according to local authorities,  Reuters cites .

Santa Catarina officials warned citizens to avoid movement, as a state of emergency has been declared in many states.   

For decades, floods in Brazil have caused major problems. We recall that in February of this year, 94 people lost their lives after landslides in one of the most popular historical areas of Brazil, Petropolis, near Rio de Janeiro.
