A fire broke out the night before in the engine of the Cossyra ferry traveling from Lampedusa to Porto Empedocle. On board the ship were 175 passengers, of whom 83 were migrants being transferred from Lampedusa, then transferred to the Italian coastguard vessel Diciotti.
