Scientists give ALARM: A Covid subvariant with many mutations appears

Scientists give ALARM: A Covid subvariant with many mutations appears

Scientists say they have identified a new subvariant of the Beta variant of the coronavirus. A sub-variant called "B.1.1.529" has been discovered in Africa and scientists are raising the alarm because it carries multiple mutations.

According to them, there is a possibility that these mutations make it more resistant to vaccines, but there is no data so far to suggest that it is more widespread than the Delta variant.

So far ten cases of the mutation have been confirmed, three in Botswana, where the new strain of the virus was first found, six in South Africa and one in Hong Kong in a passenger returning from South Africa.

The researchers, led by virologist Dr. Tom Pickock of Imperial College London, who made the announcement, is concerned that the new variant will expand and cause new waves.

The variant contains 32 mutations in the coronavirus protein that it uses to penetrate and infect human cells, which is the main target of vaccines.

As Pickock said, "the sheer number of mutations in the protein suggests that this variant could be a real source of concern." He added that this mutation "should be closely monitored because of its profile".
