Another election, Greece appoints the interim prime minister, here's who will lead the country until June 25

Ioannis Sarmas will be the acting prime minister in Greece until the June 25 elections. Greece's president appointed him on Wednesday to form a government that will take the country back to elections in a month's time. On Wednesday, Katerina Sakellaropoulou invited the leaders of all parties whose share of the vote exceeded the 3% threshold to discuss the steps forward. The invitation was procedural and the brief talks did not produce a coalition government. Under Greece's constitution, if coalition talks fail, the president appoints an interim prime minister to lead the country to a repeat vote. So Sarmas, a senior judicial official who is president of the Hellenic Court of Audit, one of the country's three highest courts, was appointed. "It is a constitutional obligation and at the same time my duty as a citizen to accept it", he said after the appointment. A few days ago, on May 21, elections were held in Greece, where New Democracy won 40% of the vote, but refused to form a coalition. Therefore, the procedures have already started in case of non-formation of a government by any party or coalition. On June 25, the second round of elections will take place with the electoral law providing that the winner of a second vote after the first inconclusive election can receive up to 50 bonus seats for each point he wins above 25%. To benefit from the bonus seats, New Democracy must remain the largest party. If the party led by Kyriakos Mitsotakiska gets the same result in the June 25 elections as in the first round, then with the new elections it gains 30 bonus deputies, from 146 to 176.
