The Kremlin announced yesterday that a Washington Post article alleging that a Ukrainian military officer coordinated an attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline was particularly alarming because it said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not know about it. No one has claimed responsibility for the September 2022 explosions on the Danish island of Bornholm, when three of the four lines of the system supplying Europe with Russian gas were damaged. The Washington Post reported that Roman Chervinsky, a senior Ukrainian military officer, was the coordinator of the attack. The paper cited unnamed people familiar with the operation who said Ukrainian President Zelensky was unaware of it. "Chervinsky took orders from senior Ukrainian officials, who ultimately answered to the commander-in-chief, General Valery Zaluzhny," writes the Washington Post. A spokesman for the Ukrainian military told Reuters he had "no information" about the article. "Ukraine's traces in this sabotage, this act of terrorism, are increasingly appearing in reports, investigations and media articles," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "It is said that President Zelensky may not have been aware of such activities of his subordinates from the security agencies. This is a very alarming signal not only for us, but also for the countries of the collective West," said Peskov. "If the regime in Kiev no longer controls the situation in its country, then this is alarming and should also be taken into account," Peskov added.
