Coincidence or disagreement?/ Tensions between the two countries, the Hellenic media captures the detail in the British king's clothing: King Charles' Greek flag tie knotted around Sunak's neck
Written by SOT.COM.AL 1 Dhjetor 2023
"Extraverbal message with political implications or... clothing choices? A reference to his Greek roots or, simply, his favorite tie? As the UK media tries to decipher the message behind the Greek flag tie worn by King Charles in his meeting with Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the 28th UN Climate Crisis Conference, Greek public opinion is already perceived the monarch's move as an indirect disapproval of the British prime minister and simultaneous support for Athens' request for the reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures."
This is what the Greek daily 'Protothema' writes in its article, while adding that King Charles has occasionally given messages through his clothing.
Unable, as the British newspaper "The Guardian" writes, due to his royal status, to make an overt political statement of disapproval of Sunak, King Charles III used the dress code to convey his message, something that, often dense, the predecessor of the British throne, Queen Elizabeth, also chose to do.
And not only in the meeting with Sunak, but also in his speech from the podium of the Conference, King Charles sent a message with the blue and white tie.
After all, it is not the first time that he chooses to "speak" with a tie (but also a scarf on his jacket collar) in shades of blue and white, when issues of Greek interest are at the center of international news. Charles has done this in the past, but, on the other hand, he has also worn this tie on occasions that have nothing to do with Greece. According to the Greek media cited by the "Guardian", Charles' tie comes from the famous 'Pagoni Maison Des Cravates' in Kolonaki, on the pedestrian street of Voukourestiou.
Whatever the message of Charles, however, he managed to "pass" through the social networks of the British Prime Minister. Having no choice but to observe the protocol and civil decency he "forgot" when he canceled a planned meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis last Tuesday, following what the Greek prime minister told the BBC about the Parthenon Sculptures, Rishi Sunak tweeted his picture with the king.

Somehow the Greek "message" traveled around the world, reaching far beyond Dubai, where COP28 is being held.
