Instagram, the popular social networking site with more than 1.3 billion users, "helps" connect and promote a vast network of accounts openly dedicated to providing sexual content to minors. Pedophiles have long used the Internet, but unlike forums and file transfer services that target people with an interest in illegal content, Instagram doesn't just "host" these activities. According to the WSJ report, its algorithms promote them. Instagram connects pedophiles and guides them to access similar content sellers through "tailored interest" recommendations.  

Although invisible to most on the platform, these Instagram accounts are "shameless": Researchers found that Instagram allows users to search for hashtags like #pedowhore and #preteensex by linking them to accounts that use those terms to advertise material sexual orientation of the children they have. available for sale. In fact, such accounts often claim to be run by children themselves!

Instagram accounts that offer to sell illegal sexual material generally do not openly publish it, but instead post a "menu" of the content. Some accounts require buyers to delegate specific actions. Some menus include prizes for videos of children "harming themselves" and even "images of minors performing sexual acts with animals," researchers at the Stanford Internet Observatory found. They even point out that children appear available for paid personal "dates". 

In response to the newspaper's questions, Meta admitted there were problems and said it had set up an internal task force to address them. Exploitation of children is a heinous crime," company representatives said, adding: "We are constantly researching ways to actively protect against this behavior."

Meta said he has busted 27 pedophile networks in the past two years and plans to destroy more. Since receiving the Wall Street Journal's questions, the platform said it has blocked thousands of hashtags that "sexualize" children, some with millions of posts, and restricts users from searching for terms known to be related to sexual abuse. It also said it is working to prevent its systems from recommending potentially pedophile adults to connect with each other or interact with each other's content.

Former and current Meta employees who worked on Instagram's child safety initiatives estimate that the number of accounts that exist "primarily" to monitor such content "is in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions." .

A Meta spokesperson said the company is looking to block such users, deleting 490,000 accounts for violating its child safety policies in January alone.
