President Macron in trouble, citizens fill the squares, this is what is expected to happen

President Macron in trouble, citizens fill the squares, this is what is expected

Protests were held in France on January 31 in an attempt to pressure President Emmanuel Macron to abandon plans to reform pensions, with hundreds of thousands protesting and strikes disrupting transport and classes.

This is the second time in less than two weeks that France has held a mass protest challenging Macron's plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. This plan is his biggest reform during his second presidential term.

According to AFP sources within the French police, 1.2 million people protested across France.

In the January 19 protest, 1.1 million people protested.

One of the organizers of the protests, Philippe Martinez, told the media that 250 marches were held across France.

Despite the protests, Macron has not shown any sign that he will withdraw from his plan, as on January 30 he said that this reform was "essential".

To maintain peace during the protests, 11,000 police were mobilized, and in Paris alone there were 4,000 law enforcement officials.

Due to protests and strikes on Tuesday, many French residents worked from home and children did not go to school, as workers in the transport sector and those in education went on strike.

"This is more than just about pensions, this is about what kind of society we want," said Martine Beugnet, university professor.

Also, train and subway services were limited for travelers.

France has the lowest state pension eligibility age among major European economies.

The government has said that the changes are necessary to guarantee the future financing of the pension system, which is expected to go into deficit in the coming years.

But the opponents of the reform have said that the pension system is not the problem, insisting that pension expenses have not gotten out of control.

In Parliament, Macron's allies do not have an absolute majority and will have to get the votes of the conservatives to pass this new legislation./ REL
