Floods wreak havoc in Libya/ The balance deepens, reports of 11,300 victims and thousands missing
Written by SOT.COM.AL 15 Shtator 2023
The death toll in Libya's coastal city of Derna has risen to 11,300 as searches continue for survivors after massive flooding caused by two dams bursting after heavy rains.
Marie el-Drese, secretary general of the Libyan Red Crescent, told The Associated Press that another 10,100 people were reported missing in the Mediterranean city.
The deadly storm in Derna on Sunday night, which killed thousands, highlighted the vulnerabilities of the oil-rich country, which has been in conflict since the 2011 uprising that ousted dictator Moammar Gaddafi.
Storm Daniel caused deadly flooding in communities across eastern Libya, but the hardest hit was Derna.
As the storm hit the coast, residents said they heard loud explosions as two dams outside the city collapsed.
Floodwaters erupted in Wadi Derna, a valley that runs through the city, crashing through buildings and throwing people into the sea.
