Panic on board a plane, pilots fall asleep just before landing
Written by SOT.COM.AL 19 Gusht 2022
An unusual event happened with an Ethiopian Airlines plane, which had departed from Khartoum to Addis Ababa. Passengers experienced moments of horror after the pilots fell asleep shortly before landing on the airport runway.
On August 15, the Boeing 737-800 of Ethiopian Airlines was at an altitude of 37,000 meters when it was supposed to start its descent at Addis Ababa airport.
The air traffic controller tried several times to contact the crew, but without success. When the autopilot was disabled, the alarm sounded and thankfully the pilots woke up, who reacted immediately and eventually landed the plane about 25 minutes later.
In this case, it appears that the flight management system is configured for a non-descent approach to the airport. The plane stayed on the ground for about 2 1/2 hours before departing for its next flight.
Deeply concerning incident at Africa's largest airline — Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 #ET343 was still at cruising altitude of 37,000ft by the time it reached destination Addis Ababa— Alex Macheras (@AlexInAir) August 18, 2022
Why hadn't it started to descend for landing? Both pilots were asleep. https://t.co/cPPMsVHIJD pic.twitter.com/RpnxsdtRBf
