"Those who think they can commit a crime during the day and sleep well at night should perhaps look at history."

This is the message of the Hague prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan to the war criminals. His statement comes after the court's decision to issue an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of war crimes in Ukraine.

Khan says no one thought Slobodan Milosevic, the Serbian leader who stood trial for war crimes in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo, would end up in The Hague.

"But he did. Similarly, Charles Taylor of Liberia, who was sentenced to 50 years in prison, and Felicien Kabuga of Rwanda, who was arrested in 2020," said the prosecutor.
