A woman, mother of two, was killed when she was struck by lightning on Boquilla Beach in Cartagena, Colombia.

The unfortunate Froilanis Maireth Rivas Román fell to the ground immediately after being struck by lightning.

At the same time, an eyewitness recorded the terrifying moment. The 34-year-old woman was seen walking along the coastline with footage showing a large bolt of lightning striking her.

Next to her was a policeman who seems shocked by the sound of lightning, but without seeing the woman.

Another holidaymaker falls to the sand in shock and then runs to help the woman who died on the spot from electrocution.

Román was visiting Boquilla Beach in Colombia with family members.

Froilanis is survived by a son and a daughter and often shared posts with her two children on Facebook. She also had her own clothing company on Instagram.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the odds of someone being struck by lightning are one in a million, yet nearly 90% of victims survive. In Colombia, deaths from lightning due to weather conditions are numerous.

According to the Industrial University of Santander, the country's high number of mountains and open fields make the region prone to electrical discharges.

The university said: "Colombia is the region with the most lightning activity in the world, which increases the number of deaths and injuries due to this phenomenon, especially in rural areas."
