The FBI agent who kept the Russians with "top secret" information for 20 years dies in prison, who was the spy who betrayed the USA, here is the fake job that "trapped" him and put him behind bars

The FBI agent who kept the Russians with "top secret" information for

Robert Hanssen was one of the most dangerous spies in FBI history. The former US agent who has died in prison leaked top secrets to Moscow for nearly 20 years, betrayals the agency says cost lives. It took 300 agents to "take him down" finally, exposing him. Two of them who played a leading role in this, have spoken to the BBC, showing how they did it. In December 2000, FBI agent Richard Garcia had a mysterious visit from a colleague overseeing the Russia case. "He asked, 'Do you know a guy named Robert Hanssen?'" Mr. Garcia recalled. "I said no," he adds. "The colleague said, 'Good, because you'll know him soon,'" Garcia recalls. A few months later, thanks in part to Garcia's undercover work, the whole country would know the agent Hansen. His arrest in February 2001 sent shockwaves through the intelligence community and his double life was all over the front pages of newspapers at the time. More than two decades later, on Monday of this week, authorities announced that he had been found unconscious in his cell at the maximum security prison in Colorado, where he was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. for 15 charges. He was 79 years old and is thought to have died of natural causes. without possibility of parole, guilty of 15 charges. Hanssen's Betrayal

Hanssen had studied Russian in college and started working for the FBI in 1976. Within a decade, he was passing the bureau twice. Beginning in 1985, Hanssen operated as a spy within the US government, selling top-secret documents to the USSR and Russia and compromising the identities of undercover spies. According to the 100-page statement outlining his crimes, Hanssen's espionage resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of three American sources and the execution of two others. Some of the top-secret documents Hanssen handed over included a US intelligence assessment of Soviet efforts to gather information on US nuclear programs. In exchange for his deceptions, the Russians paid Hanssen $1.4 million, $600,000 in cash and diamonds, and 800, Another $000 in a bank account. His handlers in Moscow did not know his identity. He used the alias "Ramon Garcia," no relation to Robert Garcia, a coincidence that probably didn't sit well with either of them. His activities continued long after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the USSR. He tried to communicate with the Russians until the moment of his arrest.

Zbulimi i tij

By February 2001, 300 agents were working the case, according to the FBI. Hanssen was arrested in February 2001 in Foxstone Park, Virginia, and charged with espionage. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. FBI Director Louis Freeh called Hanssen's treason "the most treasonous act imaginable against a country governed by the rule of law." Hanssen was sent to prison in Florence, Colorado, where he remained for more than two decades until his death this week. The story of its discovery looks like a Hollywood movie, and in fact, it inspired one. The story of O'Neill, one of the agents who discovered Hanssen, was turned into the 2007 spy thriller Breach, starring Ryan Phillippe, Chris Cooper and Laura Linney.
