A bomb blast has killed a Somali journalist who was a critic of the Islamic militant group al-Shabab. He was killed in a suicide bombing in the capital, Mogadishu. Abdiaziz Mohamud Guled was killed as he was leaving a restaurant in the city. Two other people nearby were injured in the blast and taken to hospital.
The Islamic militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack and admitted to targeting a journalist who worked for Radio Mogadishu.
According to Radio Mogadishu, the assailant detonated a device in front of a car near the restaurant where Guled was accompanied by the director of the Somali National Television and a driver, as a result of which the journalist was killed.
Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble also reacted to this event, expressing his condolences to the family.
"Abdiaziz was a hard-working journalist and a national hero who worked bravely for his country, people and religion," he said.
Journalist Guled was known for his interviews with the arrested al-Shabab suspects, and his broadcasts often attracted large audiences.
Al-Shabab is an Islamic extremist group that has fought with UN-backed government troops for more than a decade. the Islamic militant group controlled the capital Mogadishu until 2011, when it was ousted by African Union troops, but still controls an area in Africa orchestrates frequent attacks against the government.
Al-Shabab defends the strict version of Saudi-inspired Islam, while most Somalis are Sufis. Al-Shabab has imposed a harsh version of Sharia in areas under its control, including stoning women accused of adultery and cutting off the hands of thieves.
Government officials have blamed the group for some of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Somalia. Last year, analysts at the Location and Event Data Project on Armed Conflict estimated that al-Shabab had been responsible for the deaths of over 4,000 people since 2010.
