Worse than Albania/ The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission shocks with the statement: Sydney with a 'black face', the capital of cocaine and heroin

A wastewater analysis reports that Sydney ranks first in Australia for cocaine and heroin consumption in the capital, according to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC).

Meanwhile, Melbourne was ranked first nationally for capital city consumption of MDMA (ecstasy), while Canberra was ranked first nationally for capital city consumption of oxycodone and second for cocaine use.

The National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program's latest report, released Wednesday, tracked drug use across 12 legal and illegal substances.

The data covers 14.3 million Australians, about 57% of the population, and is based on sewage samples collected across the country in August and October.

The report found that over 14 tonnes of methylamphetamine, also known as meth or ice, cocaine, heroin and MDMA, or ecstasy, were consumed between August 2021 and August 2022, with an estimated value of A$10 billion ($6.68 billion Americans).

This represents a 10% decrease in consumption compared to the previous year.

"This is a worrying amount, in terms of the economic cost as well as the actual expenditure on drugs and the cost to the community," ACIC acting chief Matt Rippon said in a statement.
