Macron, afraid of the "encirclement of Paris", how the French president will try to blame the EU, here is the plan of the French president
Written by SOT.COM.AL 31 Janar 2024
French President Emmanuel Macron's government is expected to announce concessions to respond to protests by farmers blocking key highways with tractors. To that end, Macron plans to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to seek EU measures to support French farmers. The meeting will focus on complaints about Ukraine's wheat exports, which are considered unfair competition among farmers. Macron is expected to call on the EU to freeze the trade deal with Mercosur countries - Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - as farmers fear it will lead to an influx of cheap products into the bloc.
Farmers are demanding higher product prices, reduced red tape and fewer environmental restrictions. More than 1,000 tractors are currently blocking 8 highways around Paris, forcing commuters to take detours. "The siege of Paris is continuing," said Damien Greffin, vice president of the country's largest agricultural union, FNSEA. Protesters brought sleeping bags, food, water and toiletries in case of a several-day blockade. At least 37 other highways across France are blocked. Although authorities have deployed 15,000 police across the country, they have allowed protesters to continue blocking roads as long as there is no violence. Macron, who initially avoided direct involvement, is facing pressure to address the crisis and discuss key issues with Ursula von der Leyen. The French president also fears losing votes as EP elections approach.
