North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile into waters off the eastern Korean Peninsula on Sunday, according to South Korea and Japan.

US official Pyongyang called North Korea's action a warning against US and South Korean military exercises. The ballistic missile is believed to have flown 800 kilometers before hitting its target, South Korea's military said. While the Ministry of Defense in Japan has said that the missile flew at a height of 50 kilometers.

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, has condemned this missile test by the North Koreans, and has described it as a "clear violation" of the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. Shortly after the launch, the Ministry of National Defense of South Korea has said that the United States has included the B-1B strategic bomber in the military exercises that Seoul is conducting with Washington in recent days.

The US Indo-Pacific Command has said that the North Korean missile launch does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel and its allies.

However, the statement mentioned that it nevertheless highlights the destabilizing influence of Pyongyang's illegal weapons. Also on Thursday, North Korea fired what it suspected to be an intercontinental ballistic missile between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Many experts say North Korea uses its rivals' drills as a pretext to aggressively expand its nuclear arsenal and overall military capability. They say the country aims to force the US to accept its status as a nuclear power and negotiate an end to sanctions against it from a position of strength.

North Korea last year passed the law to declare itself as a state with nuclear weapons. The country's leader, Kim Jong-un, has dismissed the possibility of disarmament talks. Official Pyongyang conducted six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017, despite sanctions.
