He interviewed President Putin, serious accusations against the well-known German journalist: He received 600,000 euros from the Russian oligarch

He interviewed President Putin, serious accusations against the well-known

The well-known German journalist and author, Hubert Seipel, who interviewed the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and wrote two books about him, received 600,000 euros from companies connected to the Russian oligarch, Alexei Mordashov, it was said in a joint research. Mordashov is linked to Putin and is on the Western sanctions list.

Seipel is known in Germany for an exclusive interview with Putin in 2014 and has made a documentary about him. The investigation by German broadcaster ZDF, Der Spiegel magazine and investigative media outlet Paper Trailer Media said Seipel, an award-winning journalist, received money through a Cyprus-based company linked to Mordashov for the two books. which have been described by some as favorable portraits of Putin.

According to confidential Cyprus-based financial services files obtained by German journalists, Seipel signed a €600,000 deal in 2018 to sponsor, write and promote a book about the "political climate in Russia" - an extremely high fee for publishing houses in Germany. The book was published in 2021 under the title "Putin's Power: Why Europe Needs Russia?", after a biography published in 2015 under the title "Putin: Inside Power".

In the documents obtained by the research, there is a document, a manuscript that gives signs that Seipel may have received money even in 2013 for the preparation of the biography of Putin. Seipel, who has said he has met Putin "almost 100 times" and was one of the few Western journalists to have direct contact with the Russian leader, did not warn readers or the publishing house about potential conflicts of interest. Seipel has confirmed for ZDF that he received "financial support through Mordashov", but he claimed that "this has not affected the content of his books in any way", mentioning a clause in the contract that states that the author " there is no obligation to the sponsor regarding the book project".

The television company NDR has said in the response requested by the research team that it had no knowledge of the Russian financing and said that it is considering a lawsuit against it. Mordashov, the Russian tycoon who has been under sanctions by the United States, the European Union and Great Britain since last year because of his ties to the Kremlin, owns a German travel company, TUI. He is one of the richest people in Russia, with a fortune of 21 billion dollars, according to Forbes magazine.
