A British warship has been deployed to the North Sea to protect pipelines that bring oil and natural gas to the UK.
HMS Somerset, a Type 23 ship, was sent to "secure" those working near the pipelines after the suspected sabotage of Nord Stream 1 and 2, the Ministry of Defense said.
A navy source said the area of ??concern was around oil platforms in the North Sea, where there are large pipelines that send oil and gas to Britain and Scandinavian countries. the warship is working with the Norwegian navy, the Ministry of Defense said.
"There are a number of uncertainties related to that area and the infrastructure," said one source. "The possibility of something happening is remote, but people are concerned, and what better system to have than a ship that has good radar and good sonar?"
The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines from Russia to Germany caused three leaks after a series of apparent explosions on the Danish island of Bornholm.
Underwater explosions involving several hundred kilograms of explosives led to huge leaks of methane into international waters in the Baltic Sea. Several countries have blamed Russia for the attacks, which it has denied.
Although the navy always has a warship in their waters, it is specifically designated to "secure" British citizens working on oil platforms and partner countries, writes The Times.
On Monday members of the Joint Expeditionary Force, a UK-led security coalition, condemned "reckless sabotage" and "deliberate damage" in the Baltic Sea after a virtual meeting.
Members are discussing a range of security responses, including increased naval presence and intelligence and surveillance capabilities, which could come in the form of spy planes.
Defense ministers from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK called out "blatant and irresponsible attacks against critical civilian infrastructure", although they did not attribute any blame.
