Big loss/ Intel founder and Silicon Valley creator, helped transform modern technology, dies

Gordon Moore, a pioneer in the microprocessor industry who founded Intel and created Silicon Valley, has died at the age of 94.

Intel and Moore's family philanthropic foundation said he died Friday surrounded by family at his home in Hawaii.

Moore was a giant in the technological transformation of the modern era, helping companies bring ever more powerful chips into ever smaller computers. He co-founded Intel in July 1968, eventually serving as president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board.

Two decades before the computer revolution began, Moore wrote in 1965 that computer integrated circuits, a relatively new invention at the time, would bring about miracles like the creation of computers and laptops. He envisioned automation in cars, as well as personal communication devices, long before cell phones and smartphones appeared.

After completing his doctorate in the 1950s, Moore worked at Fairchild Semiconductor, which manufactured transistors and integrated circuits.

In 1968 he left with Robert Noyce and they founded Intel, which today is one of the electronics giants.

Towards the end of his life, Moore turned to philanthropy, creating with his wife a foundation focused on environmental protection.
