Lose your life following the trend in social networks, this is what the minor

The parents of a 13-year-old Australian girl who died after taking part in a popular social media trend known as "chroming" are calling for tighter restrictions on social media.

Esra Haynes, from Melbourne, died after suffering a cardiac arrest when she inhaled fumes from a can of deodorant - a trend known as "chrome" - at a friend's house in March, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Just over a week later, her parents had to make the difficult decision to turn off her life support because of the irreparable brain damage their daughter had suffered.

According to the Better Health Channel, chrome and petrol sniffing are two of the most common forms of inhalant abuse in Australia, particularly among some young people.

Inhaling the chemical substances can produce feelings of euphoria or a "high" that is similar to consuming alcohol or cannabis, according to health officials. However, long-term or regular "chromium" can lead to significant health problems such as liver, kidney or brain damage and, in some cases, death.

A 2017 survey of Australian high school students found that teenagers in their early years of high school were the most likely to be inhalant users, with nearly 20 percent of students aged 12 to 17 having used at least once inhalers.

According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, approximately 1 in 5 children in the United States report having used inhalers by eighth grade.

After Esra's death, Victoria's Department of Education in Australia said it would step up efforts to increase information among children about the dangers of chromium.

In addition, numerous stores across Australia, working in cooperation with local police, have begun enclosing aerosol deodorants behind a glass case in response to the trend, according to reports.
