The end of Russia closer than ever, an air superpower is born in Europe, the four Nordic countries join forces against Vladimir Putin

The end of Russia closer than ever, an air superpower is born in Europe, the

The Nordic countries are cooperating, more than ever, to strengthen the air defense of the region. The initiative, formalized by a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI), comes against the background of ongoing security tensions, provoked by Russia's war against Ukraine, which is also affecting northern Europe and the Baltic countries. The first of its kind among the Nordic states, the JDI was signed on March 16 at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany by the commanders of the Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Danish air forces.

A "mini-NATO"

The concept of a joint Nordic air force, comprising over 250 modern front-line combat aircraft, has been the subject of ongoing discussions between Nordic governments since the mid-1990s. The status of Sweden and Finland remained an obstacle to progressing talks. . With the two countries now poised to join NATO, the Nordic governments seem to have found the right moment and the right ground to discuss the plan to create a "mini-NATO" that would provide a formidable capability and unified air force. The main goal of the JDI is to strengthen air force cooperation between the four Nordic countries, promoting concrete joint initiatives to develop a strong regional air defense. The JDI envisages a cooperation between the Nordic air forces allowing them to operate together in any situation. The Air Defense Operations Concept (ADOC), included in the JDI, proposes the development of an integrated management structure for the planning and execution of air operations. Furthermore, the concept envisages the development of a flexible and sustainable support system as well as joint training and exercise activities between the four Nordic air forces.

250 fighter jets

Major General Rolf Folland, chief of the Norwegian Air Force (NAF), sees the idea as a basis for creating a joint Nordic air operations center that could also include the United States and Canada under a single command structure. an apparent interest in a regional initiative for a joint air command in the northern part of NATO. We have a lot to learn from each other. With a total of nearly 250 modern fighter jets, this will be a large combat force that needs to be coordinated," Folland said. "The move to integrate the air force was triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February last year," Danish air force commander Major General Jan Dam told Reuters. "Our combined fleet can be compared to a major European country," he said.
