"The most mysterious force in the universe", what is "Dark Energy"
Written by SOT.COM.AL 9 Qershor 2023
Dark energy is the name given to one of the most mysterious forces in the universe. We know it exists, in part, because of the observation that our cosmos is in the process of tearing itself apart into layers.
In the late 1990s, two teams of astronomers set out to settle a result. Cosmologists had been at odds for more than a decade in their quest to measure the total amount of matter and energy in the universe.
A set of observations from the early universe suggested that our cosmos was flat, meaning there was enough matter in it to eventually bring our expanding universe to a gentle halt.
Another set of observations, however, implied that our universe was open, meaning there wasn't nearly enough material to hold back an infinite expansion.
Both teams measured distant supernovae: dying stars so bright that they could be seen hundreds of millions of light-years away.
Astronomers used those supernovae to figure out the distances from their host galaxies and determine how fast those galaxies were moving away from us. From there, they can construct a history of the expansion of the universe and understand the total matter and energy content of the cosmos.
