What is being warned? DW explains the scenarios: Europe is arming itself, even

The world as a whole is disarming, Europe is arming, even strongly. The results of the latest SIPRI report of the Stockholm Peace Institute can be summarized with this formula. The Swedish institute examines and compares the global arms trade around the world and supplies opinion and experts with military data.

According to the researcher of SIPRI, Pieter Wezeman in a conversation with Deutsche Wellen, the main trends in the arms trade include "the significant increase in the import of weapons to European countries" and "the increasing role of the USA as a supplier of weapons to the whole world".

In the most recent time span considered from 2018-2022, the world trade of mothers has decreased by 5% compared to the period 2013-2017. Meanwhile, European countries' arms imports from the USA have increased by 47%, those of NATO countries by even 65%. The reason for this is related to the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine number 3 in the world as an importer

Previously, Ukraine did not play a role as a buyer of weapons, this is because the former Soviet republic produced its own weapons and still had many weapons from the time of the Soviet Union. But if you look at the figures for the import of weapons in 2022, Ukraine has risen to the third place in the world as a country importing weapons.

While the five main arms exporting countries in the world are USA, Russia, France, China and Germany.

Nothing has changed in this ranking compared to the previous period.

Russia has increased its influence as a supplier of weapons in the Sub-Saharan region, especially in Mali. Previously, Mali bought weapons from many countries, including France and the USA. After the military coup in 2020 many Western countries were reserved, while Russia increased sales in this country.DW
