Several sailors of Britain's Royal Navy ended up in hospital today after consuming contaminated water on board their ship.
According to the Daily Mail, the ship HMS Portland deviated from its route and docked at the naval base in Portsmouth to provide first aid to the sailors.
An official of the Ministry of Defense said that the situation is serious, as the sailors have been sent for medical treatment.
"The situation is serious. We have followed every procedure according to protocol before departure. Some scientists have gone on board the ship to make the necessary checks. The water is contaminated by something, which has not yet been determined" - said the unidentified official.
A Royal Navy spokesman said: “We can confirm that HMS PORTLAND has returned to HMNB Portsmouth as a precaution, following a problem with one of the ship's fresh water systems.
The health and safety of our staff is of the utmost importance and we are taking a number of measures to protect the shipping company while the matter is investigated."
The reports of water contamination come just weeks after HMS Portland announced it was monitoring the Russian warship Admiral Gorshkov and its accompanying tanker Kama as they navigated the North Sea.
