According to NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, a newly discovered asteroid roughly the size of an Olympic swimming pool has a "slim chance" of hitting Earth in 23 years. Most likely on Valentine's Day in 2046.
The asteroid has a 1 in 625 chance of hitting Earth, based on data projections from the European Space Agency, though NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Sentry system has calculated the odds differently, at roughly 1 in 560. But so far the rock The spacecraft — called 2023 DW — is the only object on NASA's danger list that ranks with a 1 in 10 chance.
The asteroid has a diameter of about 50 meters, according to NASA data.
