The Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, once again appealed to the European Union for joint management of immigration. The government of Rome underlined that what was decided in the European Council in February must be implemented urgently, triggered by the sinking of the ship a few weeks ago in Coutro, Calabria.
"After the tragic shipwreck that took place in Coutro, Calabria, on February 26, the common commitment to provide an adequate European response to the complex problem of migration makes even more urgent the need to implement what was decided at the European meeting of February", the statement says.
"As underlined by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, concrete measures to increase external action, expanded cooperation in terms of repatriations and readmissions, control of the EU's external borders and the fight against human trafficking must be are applied, using the EU side, all necessary policies and tools", added the Italian government.
On February 26, a migrant boat capsized off the southern coast of Italy, killing dozens.
