"In February 2023, a total of 76,505 first-time asylum applicants applied for international protection in EU countries," Eurostat's announcement states, adding that this is an increase of 41% compared to the same period. period last year.

Syrians with 9,885 and Afghans with 9,310 cases represent the two largest groups of first-time asylum seekers.

Russian citizens ranked eighth, making 2,385 applications.

About 2,475 applicants were unaccompanied minors.

Over two-thirds of the cases were reported in Germany, Spain, Italy or France.
