Resigned last week, Sweden's prime minister returns to office

Resigned last week, Sweden's prime minister returns to office

Magdalena Andersson, who resigned seven hours after being elected Sweden's first female prime minister last week, has been re-elected to the top post.

It emerged victorious after another vote in the Swedish parliament on Monday. Last week, just hours after she was elected, Andersson's budget proposal was rejected in parliament and she lost the support of the Green Party from her coalition.

A government that took weeks of negotiations to form quickly collapsed. The speaker of the Swedish parliament (Riksdag), Andreas Norlén, said he was "sorry" for what happened on Wednesday, and after a poll of party leaders once again concluded that votes would again be there to vote. Andersson.

The three parties that brought him to power earlier indicated they would allow him to be re-elected.

So it turned out to be on Monday. This time she will head a one-party minority government, made up only of her Social Democrats.

Although she was elected to the post for several hours last week by a single margin of votes, before finally resigning, she had not formally taken office.

Andersson, as leader of the Social Democrats, had managed to secure enough support in a coalition deal to secure votes in parliament for her bid for prime minister.

The last-minute deal was thanks to an agreement with the Left Party to increase pensions. This, however, led the Center Liberal Party to reject its budget without blocking its entry into power. That afternoon parliament approved a budget from the right-wing opposition, which was prepared for the first time with Sweden's far-right Democrats.

The Social Democrat coalition partner, the Greens, refused to govern with a budget formed in partnership with the far right, so its government actually collapsed.
