Boris Johnson faces demands to resign as prime minister: In the name of God, go

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday rejected calls for the resignation of opponents and some of his lawmakers, to salvage the post of prime minister amid a deepening revolt within his party on Downing Street.

Johnson, who in 2019 won the majority of his party in more than 30 years, is now struggling to strengthen his authority after a series of revelations about parties at his Downing Street residence during the COVID blockades, writes Reuters.

Johnson has repeatedly apologized and yet, he participated in what he said he thought was a work event on May 20, 2020, which staff were told to "bring his drink". Johnson said Tuesday that no one had told him the meeting was against COVID rules.

"I expect my leaders to be held accountable for the actions they take," Conservative pro-Brexit lawmaker David Davis told parliament.

Davis cited a quote from a Conservative lawmaker, Leo Amery, to then-Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain regarding the treatment of the war in 1940: "You have stayed there too long for the good you have done. In the name of God, go."

Asked directly by an opposition lawmaker if he would resign, Johnson said "no."

About 20 Conservative lawmakers who won their seats in the last national election in 2019 plan to submit letters of no confidence to Johnson. A handful of others have already said they had written such letters.

An analysis by The Times showed that 58 conservative lawmakers had openly criticized the prime minister.
