"Bomb" at the meeting of world leaders in Hiroshima, this is why Brazil's peace plan for the war in Ukraine risks exploding, the behind-the-scenes inside the G7 is revealed

Written by Elmas Bogdani 24 Maj 2023

Maybe it was just a matter of commitments. And after all, when two leaders are in a meeting like the G7, where it is necessary to distribute a dense agenda of appointments in just 48 hours, it sometimes happens that a summit conceived at the last minute can be skipped. But despite the intensity of the programs established in Hiroshima, one fact remains from the G7 meeting: Zelensky and Lula have not met. And failure to meet cannot but lead to considerations of a political nature as well. This blows up the plans of the president of Brazil, who stated that he plans to serve as a mediator to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Behind the Scenes
To understand why failure to date is not just a matter of agenda, we need to start from afar. At least since May 2022. The war in Ukraine had just begun, while on the other side of the world Brazil was preparing for one of the most delicate election campaigns in its recent history. Ignacio Lula da Silva, after two terms as president between 2002 and 2010 and after various legal vicissitudes, was preparing to officially present his new candidacy. And in an interview with Time that May, he had his say on the conflict in Kiev. Without prejudging the condemnation of the conflict, Lula certainly did not mince words about Zelensky. "A war never has one person in charge," he said. "Zelensky wanted war, if he didn't, he would have negotiated more". As expected, the conflict was not a priority in the Brazilian electoral campaign. In October, Lula defeated the outgoing Bolsonaro in a runoff, and in January, when the former unionist was reinstated as president, congratulatory messages also arrived from Kiev. But it is no mystery, within the various diplomatic offices, that there is no personal relationship of sympathy between the returning Brazilian president and his Ukrainian counterpart. A distance that is also political, highlighted last April when Lula received Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in his office. that there is no personal relationship of sympathy between the returning Brazilian president and his Ukrainian counterpart. Failure to meet
Despite mutual mistrust, many Western leaders in Hiroshima tried to arrange a bilateral meeting between Lula and Zelenskiy. Both the Japanese hosts and the French officials behind Emmanuel Macron began a busy diplomatic work to allow the meeting of the two presidents in question. It was a real race against time. Because while Lula was already invited to Hiroshima a few weeks ago, the Ukrainian president's presence in Japan was confirmed only shortly before. As reported by the Financial Times, the time to prepare the ground for a meeting was very short. Rumors emerging from the G7 speak of Lula being reluctant to see Zelensky. And this despite the fact that other leaders who were not in line with NATO's positions had already held meetings with the Ukrainian president. As in the case of the Indian Prime Minister Modi, representative of a government, that of New Delhi, neutral and always abstained in the votes held at the UN on the war. The meeting between Lula and Zelensky would have represented, above all for the United States, the icing on the cake of a G7 where Washington managed to advance a joint statement against the war and against the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine. But in the end the meeting did not take place. On the basics, doubts hang over Lula's resistance to the bitter end even in the face of diplomatic pressure from various governments. But in the last few hours another reconstruction has come out. above all for the United States, the icing on the cake of a G7 where Washington managed to advance a joint statement against the war and against the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine.
