More than 1,000 migrants, packed into three boats - which were overcrowded - were brought safely to two Italian ports, a coastguard said on Saturday.
The rescues came on the same day that the body of the 74th victim was discovered after a migrant boat capsized in Italy nearly two weeks ago. The victim is a girl aged about 5 years.
Italy's latest migrant tragedy, which occurred on February 26 off the coast of Calabria, has sparked fierce criticism of the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for failing to intervene in time to save the boat.
The coast guard said on Saturday that more than 1,000 migrants were rescued after a major rescue operation that began on Friday, with three boats caught drifting off the coast in southern Italy, Radio Free Europe reports.
The first boat had 487 migrants on board, who, according to the watchdog, were brought safely to the port of Crotone at around 2:00 a.m. on March 11.
On the second boat were about 500 other migrants in the port of Reggio Calabria. While the third boat had 379 people on board, they were rescued by two coast guard patrol boats and the migrants were transferred to a navy ship bound for the Sicilian port of Augusta.
The Italian prime minister in February expressed "deep sorrow" over the sinking of the boat, and vowed to end irregular maritime migration as a way to prevent more tragedies.
She then sent a letter to European leaders urging them to act quickly to solve the continent's long-term migrant problem.
