"This year is the hottest in history", declared the head of the United Nations, at the beginning of the COP28 climate summit.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the data shows that "we are living through climate collapse".
He called on the international community to act and fulfill their climate commitments.
His comments came after the World Meteorological Organization reported that 2023 has broken the global temperature record.
There are fears that 2024 could be even warmer due to the El Niño weather system.
Guterres noted that sea levels and sea surface temperatures have reached record highs and that Antarctic sea ice levels have reached a record low.
“This year has seen communities around the world affected by fires, floods and high temperatures... Record global warming should send shivers down the spine of world leaders. And that should prompt them to act," he said at the Climate Change Summit in Dubai.
