Mortality in the EU decreases significantly in February, in contrast to Albania

After reaching two significant peaks in spring and autumn 2020, excessive mortality began to fall in the first two months of 2021 in the European Union, reports Eurostat, in the latest monthly update of the consequences data provided by Covid in Europe.

In January mortality increased by 16% and in February by only 5%, compared to the averages of the same period in 2016 - 2019.
According to Eurostat, during the early phase of COVID-19, excessive mortality in the EU reached its peak. seen in April 2020, with an increase of 25% compared to the average of the same month over 2016 - 2019.

From the first wave the most affected was initially Italy, with fatalities increasing to almost 50% in March, while in April, the virus was most deadly in Spain, with an increase of 79.4%, followed by Belgium (74%) and the Netherlands ( 54%). After taking restrictive measures across Europe, Europe took a breather. Between May and July, a lower level of excessive mortality was recorded, while another increase in mortality began in August-September with the second wave of the pandemic.

Excess mortality in the EU was 18% in October and 41% in November, followed by 30% in December, Eurostat reports. In the second wave, the most hit were Poland (+ 97% in November), Bulgaria (94.4%), Slovenia (90.6%), also in November. Indicators remained high in December, albeit declining.

In January and February 2021, after strict quarantines were undertaken in many countries, additional fatalities fell significantly in most countries, some of them even saw a decline (Sweden -5.2%), Norway (-12.9), Austria (-3), Cyprus (-8.3%), Belgium (-9.3%), Germany (-2.7%).

In February the pandemic peaked in Slovakia (65.5%), while this country had managed to keep the virus in check until October, and in the Czech Republic (+ 40%), which also felt the effects from October, as well as Portugal (+ 34%) . For all other states, growth was lower than 15% (see interactive chart at the end).

After March, the situation in the country has calmed down significantly, both in hospitalizations and in the daily reported deaths, as the strong and deadly waves that the country went through seem to have led to a rapid move towards the so-called herd immunity. This was helped by the start of mass vaccination in mid-March, which exceeded 330 thousand doses, or 11.5 doses per 100 inhabitants./Monitor
