REL: Oncology doctors in Tirana were discharged, patients were transferred to a private clinic

REL: Oncology doctors in Tirana were discharged, patients were transferred to a

Seven people, including two doctors from the Oncology hospital and the deputy director of the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center in Tirana, have been investigated and dismissed, as they are suspected of having created an abusive scheme of transferring patients from the state hospital to a private clinic.

"In cooperation with each other, the doctors, specialists and the hospital administrator referred patients diagnosed with tumor diseases to private clinics for profit purposes, not offering them services in the Oncology hospital", says the announcement of the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana.

For one of the doctors, the security measure "house arrest" has been set, while for the deputy director of the Hospital Center, the other doctor and the coordinator of the oncology hospital, the security measure "obligation to appear" has been set. They are being investigated for "abuse of duty".

The Minister of Health, Albana Koçiu, told the media that all the people involved in the investigation into the abusive scheme that transferred patients from Oncology to the private clinic have been dismissed.

"Today's event creates a great disgust, above all when it comes to human lives, above all when we talk about employees of the health system, whose primary mission is humanity, saving people's lives, health assistance for them. I feel disgust for the situation that happened in the Oncology hospital. These individuals cannot stamp the white shirts", said Koçiu.

It has been announced on social networks that on June 26, a citizens' protest will be held in front of the Ministry of Health against what is called the "scandal of Oncology".

According to the Albanian authorities, the seven employees of the state hospital cooperated with the administrator of a private clinic, sending there patients with tumor diseases, who were forced to pay up to 3,000 euros for the service they receive for free at the "Mother Teresa" center.

They also cooperated with the administrator of a pharmacy. According to the prosecution, it is suspected that "some of the drugs that are drugs for hospital use, specifically in the Oncology department, were sent to pharmacies and sold to patients".

During the investigations, the prosecution said that it found that the cobalt therapy apparatus, which arrived in Albania in 2021, was not used and was not put into operation.

Cobalt therapy equipment is used for the treatment of patients diagnosed with tumoral diseases, especially for those with skin cancer.

For this apparatus to work, an anti-radioactive or anti-atomic bunker had to be created, according to internationally defined conditions.

"Investigations revealed that this bunker was not only not created, but the apparatus was placed outside the technical conditions. Since 2021 when this device arrived in Albania and until today, it has not only not been used, but has been left in unsuitable conditions, becoming a source of danger to the medical personnel themselves as a result of the possible radiation emitted by this device ", it was said in the file of the Prosecutor's Office.

By order of the Prosecutor's Office in Tirana, the private medical clinic where patients were sent was seized. Controls were also carried out in several pharmacies, in one of them a significant amount of suspected and counterfeit drugs and an amount of 10,000 euros were seized.

The scheme of transferring patients from Oncology to the private clinic has been discovered through infiltrators and interception of conversations. In the file of the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana, it is noted that the interceptions have revealed how Oncology employees approached the patients' relatives and suggested that they perform operations in the private clinic, since the queue was very long in the state one. They also provided drugs for chemotherapy, selling up to 1,500 euros worth of drugs that were for hospital use./ REL
