According to a study, sleeping pill users may live 5 years less and have a higher mortality risk.
Specifically, they have a 55% higher mortality risk compared to those who do not use them.
Marsild Xhemollari, a pharmacist, said on the GoodMorning Albanians show on Euronews Albania that sleeping pills cannot be given without a prescription as they are addictive and have negative side effects.
"Sedatives cannot be given without a prescription, except for herbal medicines, but we still remain fanatical about meeting with a doctor before taking them. In Albania, there is a massive demand for over-the-counter medicines, but this category definitely needs a doctor's prescription. The biggest effect is addiction, an individual who uses it without a doctor's advice will need it and have a lot of trouble quitting later. "Part of weight gain or loss are effects that can appear," he explained.
