April Fools "disrupt" the weather every spring, find out how the legend that is known throughout the Balkans was born

Almost everyone has heard that there is a legend about rain and bad weather in the last week of March and the first week of April. This period is known as "April Fools" because of a legend.

But how is the legend of the "April Fools"?

Some of you may have heard this myth from your parents or grandparents, but you may have forgotten it.

According to Albanian legends, an old woman went to the mountain to graze the cattle and seeing the warm and sunny weather said: "Now I will graze the cattle for fun. Goodbye winter, stick to the devil".

At this moment, April (or March) said: "February, my brother, lend me three days to freeze the old woman."

Soon after, legend says it got so cold that the old woman froze with all the cattle on the mountain, turning into rock.

Mount Tomorri is the place where the old women froze with the cattle, while according to legends, there is a stone in the shape of an old woman in that place today, where even to this day water springs, which is said to be the "old woman's tears".

This legend is known almost all over the Balkans, but as happens with legends, it comes in different versions.

Nowadays, there are two other versions of the legend:

Version 1

"April Fools" are seven. Seven old women took the cattle's wool and went out into a meadow to spin it.

While talking to each other, one of the old women sang a song to the month of March, saying that now she gave up on winter and that March was getting her bad.

The song was sung by all the old women in turn. Mars heard them and froze the seven.

Version 2

From the North area, they say that the mullizeza (a type of bird) hatched its birds in March. Happy with the warm weather, she began to curse March:

"Mullizeza hatched the birds,

march the bad march kacheli"...

This month of March he froze with all the birds in the nest.

The number of the mullizeza and her chicks is seven, which corresponds to the number of old women. This indicates a telling twin, related to the color of the old woman's dress and the bird's feathers.

However, in 3-7 days of April, winter returns, which brings rain almost all over the country, and after them comes the real spring.
