The newest record is set! Earth spinning faster, shortest day in decades recorded

The newest record is set! Earth spinning faster, shortest day in decades

Earth recorded its shortest day in decades on June 29 when it completed a rotation just 1.59 milliseconds short of 24 hours, the fastest time on record since atomic clocks began tracking our planet's rotation in the 1960s , according to the website timeanddate.com.

The new record provides more evidence that Earth has been spinning faster in recent years, although the exact reason for this slight acceleration is a mystery.

The planet has broken its speed record more than 24 times since 2020, reversing a previous run of several decades with slightly longer days.

Chart from timanddate.com
The Earth is not a perfect sphere, and its rotation is always being slightly off by many factors, including its internal structure, the tidal influence of the Moon, and climate change.

A team has suggested that the latest data may also be related to fluctuations in the Earth's geographic poles, which drive a phenomenon called the Chandler oscillation.

"It's certainly strange," Matt King, a professor at the University of Tasmania who specializes in Earth observation, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"It's clear that something has changed, and it's changed in a way that we haven't seen since the beginning of precision radio astronomy in the 1970s."

According to NASA, stronger winds in El Niño years can slow the planet's rotation, lengthening the day by a fraction of a millisecond. Earthquakes, on the other hand, can have the opposite effect. The 2004 earthquake that triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean moved enough rocks to shorten the length of the day by nearly three microseconds.

If Earth continues to record shorter days, scientists may eventually have to subtract a second from atomic clocks, which would be the first example of a negative leap second in history. Leap seconds have been added in the past to correct hours, but no one has ever had to cut them.

Although the recent string of record-breaking days is an odd short-term phenomenon, Earth's interactions with the Moon are slowing it down in the long term.

Previous studies have estimated that the day will be one minute longer in about 6.7 million years. So if you've been feeling like there's not enough time in the day lately, your instincts were right, but you'll likely get those lost milliseconds back in the long run.
